Some personal discoveries from my short time but plentiful adventures in Sydney.
- Everyone is unapologetically themselves, for the better or worse.
- The people are active, friendly and non-judgemental.
- The city seems very culturally diverse.
- Bogans know to not have fist fights on the trains, due to cameras. Instead, they agree to fight at the station and away from cameras. (I learnt this by almost getting stuck between two people wanting to fight each other)
- Sunrise at bondi beach is a perfect way to start the day.
- Street art and museums provide character and history to the city. It felt so refreshing to be immersed in.
- There seems to be a culture of early to bed & early risers.
- Buddy smugglers, yoga and meditation is a common sight on the beaches.
- Everyone says you need a car if you live here in Sydney. The public transport is relatively okay but a car will half your journey time. Or get an E-bike because the city is seriously hilly in areas.
- It ain’t cheap. But it’s a famous world city so what do you expect. Food is pricey but activities such as running, reading on the beach, hiking and meeting friends for coffee are relatively low cost and refreshing for the soul.
For me, Sydney was a warm and healthy breath of fresh air, particularly compared to judgemental, tiresome and overstimulating Tokyo. I was able to roam around without constant stares and people actively avoiding me on public transport. Shop owners seemed genuinely open to conversation. The active lifestyle felt addictive and people seemed happy and healthy.
I admit, I probably spent the week wearing rose-tinted glasses. Visiting Australia has been a dream of mine for over 10 years. But the blend of ocean, beaches, green space, art, inviting people, and great weather. It’s hard not to fall in love.
Sydney, Australia, I hope to be back soon…
