Japanese Food: The Weird and Wonderful

It’s always good to try new foods and see what is out there (unless you have allergies, best to avoid an allergic reaction if possible). Japan is known for the fresh fish and quality wagyu beef, as well as plenty of other strange looking edible bites. Since being here in Japan, these are the foods I have experienced.

Beef intestines: Personally not a huge favourite of mine. Extremely squishy texture, hard to chew, and not huge amounts of flavour. If you weren’t told what it was you’d probably think it was a little weird. Having being told what it was you would conclude it is still a little weird.

Beef Tongue: Similar with the intestines, it is tastier when you don’t know what it is. Without the thought of a cow tongue on your tongue, its texture is similar to bacon and you can’t go too wrong with bacon. Conclusion: Still weird.

SUSHI: I had never tried sushi before coming to Japan. The closest I have come to eating sushi was having under cooked chicken with rice in Nepal, uncooked fish and uncooked chicken is slightly different. I had an incredible first sushi experience. On the list was Salmon, Fish eggs, Eel, Sardine, Mackerel, Bonito and tuna. There were some interesting options, the eel and sardine being a couple of them but the salmon melted in your mouth and tasted as good as it looked.

Tempura: A battered and deep fried dish. Prawn, pumpkin and sweet potato tempura was offered and it was incredible. Google has informed me this is actually a classical Portuguese dish made popular by the Japanese, and I can see why! By far my favourite so far I think.

Gyoza: Pork dumplings, from what they tasted like. Really tasty, unfortunately it brought back Nepali memories of when I ate 50 in one sitting and it didn’t end well. Wonderful for most people but weird memories for myself.

Chicken Katsu Curry: I don’t need to write much about this, it speaks for itself. If I could eat this everyday I would. It’s basic but beyond wonderful and I love it.

Salad: Excluding the the green thing in a burger, eating salad as a dish was a new experience. Every lunch at work I now have a small bowl of salad. It looks similar to the western style and I’m sure it tastes similar but this doesn’t mean I like it. Conclusion; I still don’t understand why people choose to eat this weird blend of grass thing.
